Michael and I were supposed to celebrate our twenty-eighth wedding anniversary that evening at the small Italian restaurant where he had proposed years earlier. Before leaving work, he sent me a short message saying he would be home soon. I changed into the navy dress he always loved and waited by the window while rain covered the streets outside. But instead of hearing his car pull into the driveway, I received a heartbreaking call from the police. There had been an accident, and my husband was gone. Days after the funeral, our daughter Sarah arrived at my house looking pale and shaken. In her hands was a large envelope she said Michael had secretly slipped under her apartment door the night before the accident. Since she had been away on a business trip and later stayed with me after the funeral, the envelope had remained untouched the entire time. When we played the video, Michael appeared exhausted and deeply worried. He explained that he had been secretly using his own money to keep a scholarship program alive for students at a local trade school while trying to save his struggling garage business. He also warned us about his business partner, Arthur, who wanted to end the program and hide serious financial problems inside the company. Michael believed Arthur might try to destroy evidence if the truth came out. Following Michael’s instructions, Sarah and I went to the garage that same night. Arthur tried to dismiss our questions, but his nervous behavior and angry reactions revealed more than his words ever could.
Inside Michael’s office, we discovered financial records showing hidden debts, altered invoices, and proof that Michael had personally supported students whose futures depended on the scholarship program. My husband had quietly carried enormous burdens while still trying to help others. Investigators later reviewed the records, and Arthur eventually stepped away from the business. Although the garage suffered heavy losses, Michael’s scholarship program survived. I sold part of the company and used the money to continue funding the students in his memory.
