Omayra Sánchez’s Final Words Still Haunt the World — The Tragic Story Behind a Historic Photograph

Posted on October 11, 2026 By wpx_

For nearly 60 hours, 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez remained trapped beneath the wreckage left by Colombia’s devastating 1985 Nevado del Ruiz volcanic disaster. A powerful mudflow swept through the town of Armero, killing more than 20,000 people and leaving families searching desperately for survivors. Omayra’s legs were pinned beneath debris, making it impossible for rescuers to free her despite their repeated efforts. They used a tire to help keep her afloat and offered her sweet food and soda as they stayed beside her. At times, she appeared confused and spoke as though she needed to get to school, a heartbreaking reminder that she was still a child trying to understand an unimaginable situation. French photographer Frank Fournier eventually captured the image that brought her suffering to international attention, documenting the young girl’s final hours as rescuers struggled to help her.

Omayra died on November 16, 1985, with gangrene or hypothermia believed to have been responsible. Her final words, expressing love for her mother, father, and brother, have remained deeply moving for decades. Yet the photograph also sparked controversy, with some people questioning why Fournier took pictures instead of attempting a rescue. In a later BBC interview, he explained that saving her was beyond his abilities and that he felt powerless watching her deteriorate. He believed the image could draw worldwide attention to the suffering of survivors and expose serious failures in disaster preparation, especially because warnings had reportedly preceded the eruption. The photograph’s impact extended far beyond one heartbreaking moment, forcing people to confront the human cost of inadequate emergency planning. Omayra’s story remains a painful reminder of the lives lost in Armero and the importance of listening to scientific warnings, preparing communities for disasters, and responding quickly when danger threatens.
