Bo Derek Looked Back on Her Controversial First Marriage — One Regret Has Never Left Her

Posted on September 6, 2026 By wpx_

The warm Greek sunlight should have made the film set feel like a dream, but the relationship developing behind the cameras would affect three lives for decades. Bo Derek was only 16 when she traveled to Mykonos with her mother to work on Fantasies. The movie’s director, John Derek, was 46 and married to actress Linda Evans, a woman Bo deeply admired. Bo had accepted the role after leaving school, never imagining how completely the experience would redirect her future. She and John grew close during production despite their 30-year age difference and his marriage. By the time filming ended, their connection was no longer merely professional.

John and Linda’s marriage ended as the new couple remained in Europe until Bo reached adulthood, avoiding the serious legal consequences John could have faced in California. Bo’s parents were reportedly unhappy, but she returned with him to the United States and married him in 1976. Three years later, her appearance in the comedy 10 made her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars. She and John remained together through films, criticism, and changing careers until his passing in 1998. Their marriage lasted 22 years—but happiness did not erase what Bo believed it had cost someone else.

Bo later acknowledged that her choices had caused Linda tremendous pain, and she refused to excuse her role simply because she had been young. No attorney, insurance policy, mortgage agreement, investment portfolio, estate document, or court ruling could settle the moral debt she continued to feel. In a candid 2016 interview, Bo recalled telling Oprah Winfrey that she had not forgiven herself, explaining that moving forward did not require pretending her actions had been acceptable. Her remorse was made more difficult by the fact that Linda had always treated her kindly. Yet Linda eventually found an unexpected opening inside that painful chapter: she said the divorce allowed her to continue working and ultimately accept the career-defining role of Krystle Carrington on Dynasty, an opportunity she believed would never have happened had her marriage continued.

Bo eventually found companionship again with actor John Corbett, whom she began dating in 2002. After nearly two decades together, the private couple quietly married around Christmas 2020, choosing to create one joyful memory during a difficult year. Her second marriage brought a calmer chapter, but it did not rewrite the history that preceded it. The most revealing part of Bo’s story is not that her relationship with John Derek lasted until his final days, or that Linda later built a celebrated life of her own. It is that Bo still distinguishes between loving someone and approving of how that love began. Decades after the headlines disappeared, she continued carrying regret for hurting a woman she once “worshipped.” Time allowed all three lives to move forward, but for Bo, it never transformed a painful beginning into an innocent one.
