I Gave My Coworker Free Rides for 11 Months — Then He Tried to Blame Me for His Problems

Posted on November 7, 2026 By wpx_

“No,” I told my boss quietly. “He never paid me for gas.” There was a brief silence before Donovan Carter asked me to explain what had happened. For nearly eleven months, I had driven my coworker, Isaac Sullivan, to work every morning after his motorcycle broke down. He lived near my home, and what began as a temporary favor gradually became part of my daily routine. I never asked him for money or expected anything in return. But when my mother suddenly needed emergency medical attention, I told Isaac I couldn’t pick him up the next morning. His response left me stunned—and soon, my phone began filling with accusations.Track Pregnancy

I was sitting in the hospital when Donovan called again. He explained that Isaac had contacted management, claiming I had deliberately left him without transportation and had made him dependent on my help. Then I learned that Isaac had sent an email the previous evening, suggesting our arrangement was affecting his attendance and that I had been asking him for gas money. None of it was true. I had already sent Donovan the messages showing exactly what happened, including Isaac’s response when I explained my mother needed medical care. But the situation was becoming more complicated. Isaac was telling coworkers a different version of events, and HR had requested a meeting. Then Donovan sent me another message with an attachment—and what it revealed suggested someone else at work might have been involved.

The attachment showed a conversation between Isaac and Marcus, a coworker I had trusted. Isaac was discussing how to convince management that I had collected money for rides. He even asked Marcus to confirm that he had heard me requesting gas payments, despite Marcus having no evidence of such a thing. Marcus eventually shared the conversation with HR after realizing Isaac wanted him to support a false account. At the formal meeting, Isaac claimed he had paid me $40 or $50 monthly in cash, but he couldn’t provide receipts, transfers, or witnesses. I presented my original messages, call records, and audio recordings. One message clearly showed that I had told him about my mother’s medical emergency, while his reply told me to leave her at the hospital because she wasn’t alone. HR also reviewed Isaac’s attendance records and discovered he had been late on several occasions when I wasn’t even scheduled to work. The evidence contradicted his claims, and management concluded that I was not responsible for his transportation or attendance. Isaac received formal disciplinary action and a final attendance warning, while my employment record was cleared. Marcus received a separate warning after acknowledging his involvement and cooperating with the review.

A few days later, I returned my attention to what mattered most: my mother. She remained under medical care, received the follow-up treatment she needed, and eventually returned home. My sister and I shared her appointments, and our family slowly settled into a calmer routine. Isaac later called to apologize, but he also asked whether I could start driving him again. I politely refused. Months afterward, he admitted he had taken my kindness for granted and apologized in person. I accepted his words without pretending everything could return to normal. My own career moved forward, and Donovan eventually promoted me. Looking back, I don’t regret helping Isaac. I regret allowing a favor to become an expectation. My mother once reminded me that I could care about people without letting them take advantage of me. I finally understood what she meant. Helping someone is a choice—not a promise that they own your time forever.
