“For Weeks I Complained To My Neighbor About Someone Stealing My Deliveries — Then She Opened Her Front Door Wearing The Exact Pink Satin Dress I’d Ordered For A Work Party And Said, ‘Oh, No. This Is Just My Nightgown.’”

Posted on September 26, 2026 By wpx_

For three months, I kept complaining to my neighbor about someone stealing my packages.

She always listened.

She always looked shocked.

And she always told me how terrible people could be.

Then one afternoon, she opened her front door wearing the exact pink satin dress I had ordered for a work party.

I stared at her.

“Denise, where did you get that?”

She looked down at the dress.

“This? Oh, no. This is just my nightgown.”

I almost laughed.

The dress was unmistakable. Pink satin, black lace around the neckline and hem, and the exact style I had spent weeks searching for.

It had been marked delivered to my house two hours earlier.

I had even seen the delivery photograph.

But when I arrived home, the package was gone.

And now Denise was standing in front of me wearing it.

“I ordered one exactly like that,” I said.

Her smile disappeared.

“Maybe the courier delivered it to the wrong house.”

“He didn’t.”

She suddenly became defensive.

I asked if I could see the label.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s mine.”

Then she closed the door.

I stood there in disbelief.

The strange thing was that this wasn’t the first package that had disappeared.

For weeks, boxes had been arriving opened or resealed.

At first, I assumed it was a shipping problem. Then several packages disappeared completely.

I complained to the delivery companies.

I complained to my husband, Ryan.

And I complained to Denise.

She always had the same reaction.

“That is so creepy.”

“People are shameless.”

“You should get a camera.”

Looking back, that last sentence made me laugh.

She was the person who knew exactly what was happening.

That night, Ryan and I finally installed cameras around our house.

Then I decided to test something.

I ordered inexpensive items that I didn’t really need.

A pair of sunglasses arrived first.

At 1:06 p.m., the delivery notification appeared.

Twelve minutes later, my phone sent me a motion alert.

I opened the camera footage.

There was Denise.

She walked directly onto our porch, picked up the package and carried it back to her house.

She didn’t knock.

She didn’t hesitate.

She acted like she had done it a hundred times.

The next day, I tried again.

This time, I ordered a scarf.

Again, Denise came onto our property and took it.

Then she did it a third time with a phone case.

Ryan looked at me.

“Call the police.”

“Not yet,” I said.

I wanted to know how far this had gone.

I printed screenshots from every video and made a list of the packages that had disappeared or arrived opened.

The total value was more than $400.

But the money wasn’t what bothered me most.

It was the fact that I had trusted her.

I had stood in my driveway telling her about the missing packages while she knew she was the person taking them.

The next morning, Ryan and I went to her house.

I held up a photograph of her carrying one of our packages.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is this?”

“You know exactly what it is.”

She tried to claim the packages might have been delivered to her.

So I showed her the second photograph.

Then the third.

Finally, I told her I was going to call the police.

“Wait,” she whispered.

She disappeared inside.

Five minutes later, she returned carrying several bags.

On top was my pink dress.

Underneath were the sunglasses, scarf, phone case, a candle, a sweater, skincare products and another package I had assumed the retailer had lost.

I stared at everything.

“You took all of this?”

She started crying.

Then she finally admitted the truth.

Her divorce had left her struggling financially.

She said she watched packages arrive at our house and became jealous.

“At first, I was just curious,” she said.

Then she started taking things.

She even admitted she had tried on some of my clothes.

I asked her why she never simply told me she was struggling.

She looked down.

“Because your life looked easy.”

That sentence stayed with me.

She had judged my life by the boxes sitting on my porch.

She had no idea what was happening behind my front door.

I told her I was still going to make a report.

She was upset, but I wanted everything documented.

I gave the police the footage, delivery records and photographs.

Nothing dramatic happened afterward, but there was now an official record.

For months, Denise and I barely spoke.

Then one afternoon, I found an envelope in my mailbox.

Inside was a short handwritten apology.

She admitted that she had known what she was doing was wrong. She said she had kept telling herself she was only borrowing or looking, but deep down she knew better.

I read the note twice.

I didn’t become friends with her again.

But I kept it.

Almost a year later, we still live next door to each other.

We’re polite, but that’s all.

I now send expensive packages to a secure pickup location.

And I never leave important deliveries sitting outside.

The pink dress?

I never wore it.

Seeing Denise standing in it ruined the dress for me, so I returned it and bought another one.

Sometimes I still think about how strange the whole situation was.

I spent months complaining to my neighbor about a mysterious thief.

All along, the person I trusted enough to complain to was the person taking my packages.

And the moment I finally installed a camera, the mystery disappeared.
