Flannel, Forgery, and Forty-Eight Hours

Posted on September 30, 2026 By wpx_

By the time Renata’s ultimatum echoed in Walter’s kitchen, he had already made one crucial call—to his lawyer, Raymond Achebe, who had previously handled the sale of Duncan Contracting and Patricia’s estate. Raymond confirmed what Walter suspected: a forged property management contract with Lakeside Stays, a copied driver’s license taken under the pretense of helping him renew his health card, and nearly thirty thousand dollars in deposits scheduled to flow into Renata’s business account, R. Duncan Designs. Walter had not signed anything. What Renata also did not know was that the cottage—and four other properties worth a combined 4.2 million dollars—were held in the Duncan Family Trust. At Patricia’s urging, that trust contained a clause preventing any spouse from ever controlling its assets and triggering an independent review if anyone tried. Walter, who had often said “I’ll think about it” instead of “no,” finally signed the updated trust and allowed Raymond to put everything in writing.

The letter Raymond sent to Marcus and Renata laid out the trust, the forged contract, the unauthorized listing, the refunds, and the conditions under which Walter would not go to the police. Within forty-eight hours, Renata had to admit the forgery in writing, return all keys, repay cancellation fees, and agree to communicate only through counsel. Marcus, blindsided by both the trust and the fraud, drove to the cottage, knocked with the brass loon for the first time, and asked his father plainly for help. On the dock, Walter separated money from character, focusing not on the 4.2 million dollars but on how Renata had treated someone she believed to be powerless. Renata arrived with a signed admission, a key, and an account of her childhood poverty and fear. Walter stated that her real failure was exploiting someone she thought could not fight back. He chose not to press charges, helped Marcus with his debts as a loan, and watched as Marcus and Renata quietly separated. Months later, with new locks on the doors and the brass loon finally being used, Walter sat on the dock with his granddaughter Claire, explaining that real wealth is choosing what matters, and that forgiveness, like a house, is built one board at a time.
