Couple Who Met in Sixth Grade Were Weeks Away From Their Wedding — Then a Tragic Night Changed Everything

Posted on October 21, 2026 By wpx_

Leah Victoria Fonte and Shane David Hirstius had dreamed of building a life together since childhood, but their plans for a March 2027 wedding were shattered during an early-morning walk in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The engaged couple, both just 21, were walking along Nicholson Drive around 2:40 a.m. on October 18, 2026, when a southbound 2016 Nissan Rogue reportedly left the roadway and struck them. Leah died at the scene, and Shane was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Their relationship had begun in sixth grade, blossomed into romance during high school, and grown into a future their families eagerly anticipated. Shane had become a firefighter and operator with the Third District Volunteer Fire Department, while Leah was a Louisiana State University senior studying biological sciences and preparing for a career in dentistry. She had also volunteered in Panama and helped raise funds for dental care in underserved communities. Now, instead of preparing for their wedding, two families were facing an unimaginable loss.

The investigation took another turn when police arrested 20-year-old Mia Camille Dawson, whom authorities alleged had been driving while impaired. According to reports, she faced several charges, including vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident. At her October 19 court appearance, bond was set at $229,000, with house arrest required if she secured release. Leah’s mother, Jennifer Fonte, said the couple had chosen to walk rather than drink and drive, making the circumstances especially heartbreaking. Shane’s father, Steven Hirstius, later shared that the family had heard his son tried to save Leah, describing that instinct as true to the firefighter his son had become. As relatives struggled with their grief, the tragedy also raised urgent questions about pedestrian safety on Nicholson Drive, a roadway used by LSU students and others traveling through the area.Track Pregnancy

In the days that followed, university and state officials discussed potential safety improvements, including better lighting, enhanced crosswalks, and a multi-use trail along portions of Nicholson Drive. Louisiana leaders pledged to work with LSU and transportation officials to explore measures that could help protect pedestrians. Meanwhile, the families faced funeral expenses and other unexpected financial burdens. A fundraiser organized by Bonnie Muro Ust, a longtime coworker of Jennifer Fonte, sought to help with memorial costs and time away from work. At the time of the reported update, 153 donations had raised more than $10,000 toward a $14,000 goal. The legal proceedings would continue separately, while loved ones focused on honoring the couple and supporting one another through the difficult days ahead.

Shane’s family remembered him as a cheerful young man who ran toward danger when others needed help, while Leah’s loved ones celebrated her generosity, ambition, and commitment to caring for others. Their school community also mourned the loss, with Archbishop Rummel arranging a prayer service for students, alumni, faculty, and friends. The wedding that once represented the beginning of their shared future would never take place, leaving their families with memories of two people who had grown up together and chosen each other for years. Their story has since become a painful reminder to their community of how deeply a single tragedy can affect countless lives—and of the importance of making roads safer for everyone who uses them.
