Silver duct tape stretched across a first-class seat as American Airlines Flight 618 descended toward an unexpected destination. The September 3 flight had departed Dallas-Fort Worth for Newark, but trouble reportedly began roughly two hours after takeoff. Witnesses said 67-year-old Arizona passenger Arthur Lundeen became verbally abusive toward airline employees and other travelers. Former law-enforcement officer Juan Mejia and his friend Richard Olenick, seated two rows away, watched as the situation grew increasingly tense. According to their accounts, Lundeen allegedly used racist and anti-gay slurs before becoming physically confrontational. No financial loss was initially reported, but the disruption was about to carry a much greater personal cost.
Mejia and Olenick stepped in after Lundeen allegedly struck nearby passengers, including a woman who attempted to help. Mejia later claimed Lundeen bit him during the struggle, while Olenick said the passenger continued pushing and trying to rise even after being restrained. A flight attendant provided zip ties, and duct tape was then used to secure Lundeen until the aircraft could land safely. The pilots diverted the flight to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, where police were waiting. Yet the arrest on the ground was only the beginning of the consequences he would face.
Flight 618 landed safely at approximately 10:15 p.m., and officers removed Lundeen before the plane continued to Newark. Maryland authorities charged him with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, while the FBI began reviewing whether additional federal charges might be appropriate. The case could bring an attorney, court hearings, and significant legal expenses into his life, although no dollar amounts involving fines, insurance, or damages had been publicly confirmed. Those concerns were especially serious because Lundeen worked in real estate, a profession built around client confidence, mortgage decisions, property investment, and major financial commitments. American Airlines said it would cooperate with law enforcement and emphasized that the safety of passengers and employees remained its priority.
The final consequence came away from the airport. Long Realty Company confirmed that it had ended its affiliation with Lundeen after learning about the incident and the criminal charges. The Tucson-based firm said the reported conduct conflicted with the professionalism, integrity, compassion, and respect it expects from its representatives. Lundeen, who had reportedly been connected with the company for more than 13 years, was no longer permitted to represent it in any capacity. What began as an alleged outburst aboard one flight had therefore reached far beyond the cabin, affecting his freedom, reputation, and career. The disturbing episode also highlighted how quickly unacceptable behavior in a confined public space can change the lives of everyone involved—and how consequences may continue long after the aircraft reaches the gate.
