Four Letters on a Boarding Pass Can Mean Extra Airport Screening — What Travelers Should Know About “SSSS”

Posted on November 7, 2026 By wpx_

Mark had already paid $327 for his airline ticket, checked his suitcase, and started walking toward airport security when four unexpected letters caught his attention. Printed on his boarding pass was a code he had never noticed before: SSSS. He had traveled by air dozens of times, yet this was the first time he’d encountered anything like it. Worried that something might be wrong with his reservation, he checked his identification and flight information again. Everything appeared correct, but an airport employee soon directed him toward a different screening procedure. His ordinary travel plans suddenly felt more complicated, and he began wondering whether the letters indicated a serious problem. What Mark didn’t realize was that the code had a specific meaning within airport security procedures, and it didn’t automatically mean he had done anything wrong.

The four letters stand for Secondary Security Screening Selection, a designation indicating that a passenger has been selected for additional screening before boarding an aircraft. The process is associated with the Transportation Security Administration, which oversees passenger security screening at U.S. airports. Travelers may receive the designation for several reasons, although the complete selection criteria are not publicly disclosed. Some passengers encounter it only once, while others report seeing it on multiple trips. Importantly, the code is not, by itself, an accusation of criminal activity or proof that someone’s identification is invalid. Mark initially expected to pass through security within minutes, but officers explained that his belongings and identification would require additional checks. And once the process began, he discovered exactly what those four letters could mean for his journey.

During secondary screening, passengers may undergo closer inspection of their carry-on bags, additional identification checks, physical screening, or examination of electronic devices. The designation is connected to federal aviation security procedures, including TSA’s Secure Flight program. Although travelers sometimes associate SSSS with last-minute bookings, one-way tickets, or unusual travel patterns, authorities do not disclose every factor used to select passengers. The code does not automatically indicate a problem with someone’s mortgage, insurance policy, investment accounts, estate, or legal standing in court. An attorney is generally unnecessary simply because the letters appear on a boarding pass. For Mark, the additional checks took longer than his usual airport experience, but he was eventually cleared to continue toward his departure gate.

Travelers who see SSSS should allow extra time, keep their identification accessible, and cooperate with screening officers. Organizing electronics and luggage can also make additional inspections more manageable. Passengers who repeatedly encounter unusual screening delays may seek assistance through the Department of Homeland Security’s Traveler Redress Inquiry Program, known as DHS TRIP. The program allows eligible travelers to request a review of possible identification or screening-record problems, although it cannot guarantee that future delays will never occur. For Mark, the experience ended with an ordinary flight rather than the serious trouble he’d initially imagined. Those four unfamiliar letters had seemed intimidating, but understanding their purpose made the situation easier to manage. SSSS means additional security screening—not automatic evidence that a traveler has done something wrong.
