Florida Woman’s Final Words Were Captured in a 911 Call — A Neighbor’s Dogs Had Attacked Her

Posted on October 29, 2026 By wpx_

The desperate sounds coming from an eight-minute 911 call revealed the terrifying final moments of a Florida woman whose ordinary walk turned into a fatal attack. On May 17, 2026, 50-year-old Jodi Cowan was walking her small dog near her home in Cocoa when two dogs reportedly escaped a neighboring yard and attacked her. Her longtime partner, Donnell Smith, heard her screams and rushed outside, only to find himself fighting to pull the animals away while desperately trying to control her bleeding. He grabbed a knife in an attempt to stop the attack, then called emergency services as the situation continued to unfold. Dispatchers could hear Cowan struggling to breathe as Smith pleaded for help. According to court records, her heartbreaking words included, “I’m dying. Can’t breathe,” as the severity of her injuries became painfully clear.

Emergency responders rushed Cowan to a trauma center by medical helicopter, but her injuries proved catastrophic. Investigators said the attack had severed major blood vessels in her neck, including the carotid artery and jugular vein, and she died approximately four hours later. The dogs, identified as Max and Mako, belonged to neighbor Linda Cutler, who was arrested eight days after the incident and charged with manslaughter. As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding Cowan’s death, they uncovered reports suggesting the dogs had displayed aggressive behavior before the fatal encounter. One particularly troubling incident had reportedly occurred just five weeks earlier, when neighbor John Argila was bitten while attempting to protect himself with his bicycle. A passing motorist helped him escape, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Those earlier warnings raised a difficult question: Could the tragedy have been prevented if the dogs’ previous behavior had been addressed more effectively?

According to investigators, Smith had previously helped remove the dogs from Argila and had warned Cutler about their behavior. Authorities said additional fencing had been installed, but the animals were still reportedly able to escape. During the investigation, Cutler allegedly acknowledged noticing increasing aggression in the months before the fatal attack, although she suggested that someone might have been affecting the dogs’ behavior. A veterinarian who examined Max and Mako reportedly found no evidence of abuse or neglect and noted signs associated with “littermate syndrome,” a term sometimes used to describe behavioral difficulties in closely raised puppies. Such observations do not, by themselves, establish the cause of an attack. The dogs were later scheduled to be euthanized, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, while Cutler’s criminal case remained pending. Beyond the courtroom, the tragedy also raised serious concerns about public safety, homeowners’ insurance, potential liability claims, and the responsibilities owners have when animals pose a known risk.

Cowan’s death became another painful reminder of how quickly a familiar neighborhood can become the setting for an unimaginable emergency. Data cited from the National Center for Health Statistics recorded 468 deaths involving dog bites or strikes in the United States between 2011 and 2021, underscoring the seriousness of these incidents. Each case, however, involves its own circumstances, and debates about dangerous dogs often include questions about responsible ownership, enforcement, training, and whether particular restrictions are effective. For families affected by a severe attack, the consequences can extend far beyond the immediate medical emergency, bringing grief, financial pressure, and difficult legal questions about accountability. In Cowan’s case, the investigation and pending court proceedings were expected to determine the legal consequences for those involved. Her final words, preserved in the emergency call, remain a haunting reminder of the human cost when a preventable danger becomes a devastating tragedy.
