After raising three children and adjusting to life as empty nesters, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are opening their hearts to a new family member. The couple, who celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in May 2026, met a tiny rescue dog during a segment on their morning talk show, and the connection was almost immediate. Originally named Lucas, the puppy quickly won Mark over when he settled comfortably in his arms and even fell asleep. The experience brought back memories of their beloved Shih Tzu, Chewie, who had been part of their family for nearly 18 years before his death in February 2025. Now, with their children Michael, Lola, and Joaquin living independently, Kelly and Mark are preparing for a new chapter at home. Kelly admitted she was so excited about the adoption that she couldn’t sleep, describing the preparations as being like expectant parents getting ready for a baby.
The couple announced their decision to adopt the puppy after meeting him through Pet ResQ Inc., a New Jersey-based rescue organization. Mark suggested the name Javi, short for Javier, but their grown children had other ideas, sparking a playful family debate. Kelly jokingly insisted that because the children no longer lived at home, they shouldn’t get the final say. The couple is also taking precautions to make sure the newcomer gets along with their existing dog, Lena, before bringing him home permanently. After an earlier adoption attempt didn’t work out because Lena became frightened, they are determined to make this introduction carefully. For Kelly, welcoming another dog is about more than adding a pet to the household. She has even wondered whether Chewie somehow led the new puppy into their lives. Although the family is still settling on his name, the little rescue has already captured their hearts and brought fresh excitement into their home.
